Hiking Mount Liamuiga in St. Kitts

If you’re coming to stay with us at Belle Mont Farm after the lockdown has ended for a St. Kitts holiday, we are happy to show you around our beautiful island and suggest activities that you will love. For our more active, energetic guests who are looking for adventure, we recommend a hike at Mount Liamuiga.

Mount Liamuiga is a 3,792-foot high dormant volcano clad in verdant rainforest jungle. Its last eruption was 1,600 years ago, and visitors can still see signs of the awesome event in the mountain’s unique shape, stunning black lava rocks clustered in the jewel-blue sea below, and the crater at the summit.

The trail is approximately 4.5 miles round trip and is steep in places, making for a rigorous hike that pays off in breathtaking views of the island and deep immersion in its unique nature. Experienced hikers can ascend on their own, and guides are available. The trail is steepest at the end as you ascend to the edge of the crater; be prepared to scramble over rocks and large tree roots at points throughout the climb.

Enjoy the vital rainforest as you ascend the peak. You will see dozens of species of native plants and glimpse monkeys playing in the canopy. The crater encloses a lake surrounded by thick forest, and the highest point along the crater — a rock formation named Devil’s Tooth — gives visitors a supreme aerial view of the crater, the island, and the surrounding tropical waters. Once called Mount Misery during the island’s conflicted history, today’s Liamuiga is a place where you can touch paradise.
