Bay Gardens leads the way for sustainability Bay Gardens brand continues to invest heavily in the environment and make considered choices driven by sustainable tourism. They are proud to be St Lucia’s only Green Globe Gold-certified hotel chain for five years running and they operate properties that adhere to environmental sustainability performance practices. Bay Gardens Resorts remains committed to supporting environmental protection and ensuring a greener planet throughout our operations, thus improving our social, environmental and economic sustainability. Protecting Our Beautiful Destination Whether it is in the forefront or behind the scenes, our decisions and choices are driven by sustainable tourism and our three Green Globe-certified properties are testaments to our efforts. With this certification, Bay Gardens is equipped with a framework to conduct a comprehensive assessment of our environmental sustainability performance, allowing the company to monitor improvements and continue to maintain its certification. How we play our part: Phasing out the use of plastic in favor of biodegradable vessels and utensils made from wood, paper, compostable plastic and sugar cane bagasse. Ending the use of all Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam) products on all properties. Installing GEM Link occupancy sensors in its guestrooms, leading to a 20 per cent energy use reduction per occupied room. Converting all our air conditioning units to energy-efficient inverter units. Implementing linen reuse and recycling programs to reduce the amount of water utilized per occupied room. Changing all lighting energy-efficient LEDs across our properties. Participating in the SLHTA’s Virtual Agricultural Clearing House (VACH) which helps to foster better linkages between hotels and local farmers. Implementing a farm-to-table approach when designing our menus in support of local farmers and to reduce our food miles. Green Globe Gold Member status Local business award for sustainability from the Chamber of commerce Bay Gardens Resorts Embrace the natural sustainability of Golden Rock Inn Sustainability is at the heart of the Golden Rock Inn hideaway. It is a former sugar plantation dating back to the 1800s with wildly beautiful gardens that contribute to the sustainability of the property and the overall biodiversity of the island. Natural tropical breezes flow through the resort’s 11 rooms rather than air conditioning, which helps the environment which is 1,000 ft above the Atlantic Ocean in the Gingerland hills. Sustainability and protection of the environment are key aspects of the Golden Rock philosophy, which is important to the natural preservation of its surrounding environment. Golden Rock Inn prides itself on its fresh seafood from local fishermen while tropical fruits and vegetables are selected from neighbouring growers. General Manager Ivo Richli said: “At Golden Rock, we practice socially responsible choices to reduce the carbon footprint for our food deliveries. We also recycle where we can.”Golden Rock Inn Fort Young implements Zero Waste garbage sorting programme Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort is leading the way with its efforts to help the environment. The resort, has been awarded Green Globe Certification for its eco-friendly practices. These include a garbage sorting programme to categorise waste, guest and staff education on food disposal best practices and zero-waste in food production, as well as an on-property organic tomato and herb garden. The resort also promotes the reduction in the use of plastic water bottles with the introduction of an in-room glass water pitcher. All staff are also trained on the hotel’s Sustainability Management System in the areas of health, safety, service level and culture. Guests are educated about eco-initiatives before they arrive and throughout their stay. These include: The installation of energy monitoring system Implementation of a waste management monitoring system The Green Globe Standard Fort Young Hotel also plans to install a modern refrigeration system and reusable systems, energy and water conservation. Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort Turtle conservation at Saint Peters Bay Saint Peter’s Bay Luxury Resort & Residences believes in the importance of preserving the natural beauty of our surroundings and protecting the creatures that call it home. They are passionate about sea turtle conservation and education to maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. Guests can go on guided tours of local sea turtle nesting sites, and access informative talks and workshops by marine biologists, and hands-on opportunities to participate in sea turtle research and conservation efforts. It is hoped guests can become advocates for sustainable practices and help protect these magnificent creatures for generations to come. Saint Peter’s Bay S Hotel helps the community S Hotel recently donated bed linens and pillows to the Village of Hope hospice. These included: The CUMI run which raised funds for a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Montego Bay Jamaica.providing assistance to the homeless and mentally ill, such as healthcare, food and clothing. CUMI’s goal is to rehabilitate individuals so they can contribute to their own sustainability. The MoBay City Run, a new charity road race event organised by Sangster Airport to help students fund their education. This included a $2500-$3000 prize for 2022 and they have pledged $4000 from September 2023. Additionally, the hotel continues to recycle where possible. S Hotel has a company that is licensed with the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) to dispose of grease and sludge. The company is called Bio GT. They are the only company outside of Kingston Jamaica that is licensed to discharge this matter . In this case S Hotel uses them to discard their used oil and other materials which are not environmentally conducive. S Hotel Guests can help local communities when they Pack with a Purpose Divi Southwinds has partnered with Pack for a Purpose, an organisation that empowers travellers to make a direct impact on the communities they visit. Guests at Divi Southwinds are encouraged to save a little space in their suitcases when they travel to bring much-needed supplies. All donations received go to Lifelong Skills Training and a family-oriented Learning Centre which supports approximately 50 young adults with special needs from ages 16 through 22. They are in desperate need for general school supplies like chalk, ruled paper, coloured pencils, crayons, exercise books, glue sticks, handheld pencil sharpeners, paper glue, pencils, pencil cases, bags, rulers, and wide-ruled paper and flashcards. They can also do with text and reading books and art supplies, as well as computer hardware and software, tablets, educational games and toys. Increasingly they can also use fidget toys for stress, sensory, and anxiety and of course clothing and shoes. They also need medical supplies such as catheters, disposable under-pads, pull-ups, sanitary napkins, and superabsorbent liners. The participants and their families are assisted in entering adulthood through a multi-faceted approach. LSTI provides them with a free education in skills training, life skills and self-help skills to ensure they live full and productive lives. LSTI offers these same services to special parents who are unable to work, but want to continue their growth as well, by encouraging them to learn and volunteer at the Centre.
