Guyana Tourist Board
Guyana ‘Land of Many Waters’, the only English-speaking country in South America is a paradise for nature lovers. With an area of approximately 216,000 square kilometres (83,000 sq miles), more than 80% of which is lush tropical rainforest, Guyana holds excellent opportunities to enjoy nature at its best. The forests of Guyana provide refuge for buoyant populations of wildlife, many of which are endangered elsewhere in the world.
The country is famous for its waterfalls, rivers, mountains and stunning scenery. Places of interest include the Kaieteur Falls, the highest single drop waterfall in the world, the Orinduik Falls, on the boarder with Brazil, the Iwokrama Rain Forest Programme, dedicated to protecting rainforests worldwide, and the Shall Beach protected area, one of a few beaches in the world on which 4 of the 8 species of endangered marine turtle nest and which provides a sanctuary for an abundant and diverse bird life in the northwest of the country.
Georgetown, the capital, is also known as the ‘’The Garden City’’, a reflection of the tree lined avenues for which it is well known. Georgetown is also famous for the architecture of its numerous wooden mansions, canals and dykes, a memory of the country’s English and colonial past.
